Businesses which are potentially very profitable, are often held back by a lack of organisation and information, and of course the high bank charges and accountant's bills that result.

The following are comments made by some of my clients:

'Even though I realise the importance of having up to date information, I always see the paperwork as historic - something that's in the past, and I want to focus on getting more sales for the future. That's why I leave it until later - I know I shouldn't because it means I'm not properly in control, and that's when things can start to go wrong'

'The business seems to be doing really well, but we had to borrow a few thousand pounds on the credit card - some big bills needed to be paid one after the other. We just weren't expecting them'

'I find doing the paperwork mundane, something I could do without, and I really dislike reconciling the bank account - I find it so tedious'

'I've got lots of work on. I know the business would be ok if I could get the money in. I just can't find the time. There are some jobs months old that I haven't even invoiced yet, and I'm sure I'm paying much more tax than I need to because I'm not keeping a proper record of my expenses.'
